FileMixer / Join two files

Join two spreadsheets on a matching column

Pull columns from one file into another wherever an ID, email or SKU matches. It does what a VLOOKUP does, for every row at once, and tells you which rows found no match.

Your files stay on your device. FileMixer opens them inside this browser tab. Nothing is uploaded, and the page is blocked from sending data anywhere. How we know

1 Add the two files

First file: the rows you keep

Second file: where the extra columns come from

      How to use it

      1. Add the file you want to keep as the first file, for example your order list.
      2. Add the file that holds the extra details as the second file, for example a customer list.
      3. Pick the column that links them in each file, such as “Customer ID”. FileMixer guesses it when both files use the same name.
      4. Uncheck any columns you don't need from the second file, check the match count, and download.

      Questions

Is this the same as VLOOKUP?

With “Every row of the first file” and “Use the first match”, yes: each row of the first file gets the values from the first matching row of the second, and blanks where there is no match. Unlike VLOOKUP, the key column doesn't have to come first, and you can bring many columns at once.

Why do some rows not match?

Usually the values differ in a way that is hard to see: a trailing space, different capitals, or an ID stored as 00123 in one file and 123 in the other. Leave “Ignore capitals and extra spaces” on, and use “Only rows of the first file with no match” to list the rows that failed.

What does “Every row of both files” do?

It keeps all rows of the first file, then adds the rows of the second file that matched nothing, with their key in the first file's key column. Database people call this a full outer join.

What about Excel files with several sheets?

When a workbook has more than one sheet, a menu appears next to the file so you can pick the sheet to use.
