FileMixer / FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. Your browser reads the file from your disk and the tools run in the page. The site's security policy forbids the page from making network requests, so it can't send your data even by mistake. You can unplug from the internet after the page loads and the tools still work.

Is FileMixer free?

Yes. There's no account, no trial and no watermark. Custom work by Web Landscapes is paid and quoted per job.

Which file types can I open?

CSV and other delimited text (comma, semicolon, tab or pipe), Excel .xlsx, .xlsm, .xls and .xlsb, OpenDocument .ods, and JSON. You can save as CSV, tab-separated text, Excel .xlsx or JSON.

How big a file can it handle?

That depends on your computer's memory, since the work happens there. Files with a few hundred thousand rows are fine on a typical laptop. Individual files over 300 MB are refused, because a browser tab usually can't hold them.

My CSV shows strange characters like é. What happened?

The file was saved in one text encoding and read in another. FileMixer detects UTF-8, UTF-16 and older Windows encoding automatically. When it saves a CSV, it adds a UTF-8 marker so Excel reads accents correctly.

Will Excel drop the leading zeros from my data?

Not in files saved by FileMixer as .xlsx: values like 00123 are stored as text. If you save as CSV and double-click it, Excel may still drop them. See the leading zeros guide.

Are formulas kept?

FileMixer reads the value each formula last calculated, the same thing you see in the cell, and saves values. The output has no formulas.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, in any current browser. Choosing files from a phone's Files app works. Large files are slower on a phone.

Can you do this for me, or automate it?

Yes. Web Landscapes does custom data work: one-off cleanups and jobs that run every week. Call or text (786) 372-0287 or email contact@weblandscapes.com for a quote.
